Assistant Professor in Residence, Allied Health Sciences (Search #2020040)

The Department of Allied Health Sciences at the University of Connecticut invites applications for a faculty appointment as Assistant Professor in Residence. This is a full-time, 9-month, non-tenure track appointment with an expected start date of August 23, 2020. The position is renewable annually based on satisfactory performance evaluations and comes with a competitive salary and benefits package.

The Department of Allied Health Sciences has a vibrant, multidisciplinary faculty dedicated to advancing knowledge through research, teaching, advising, and community engagement. The Department has been in a period of expansion, recruiting 10 new faculty in recent years to meet growing student needs. The Department is now embarking on an initiative to offer the Allied Health Sciences major on UConn’s regional Waterbury campus. With 29 faculty, over 750 undergraduates, and 28 graduate students, we actively engage in educating and training the next generation of health professionals. The Department offers an undergraduate major in Allied Health Sciences with multiple concentrations, including Public Health and Health Promotion and Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety; three nationally-accredited health programs (Dietetics, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Diagnostic Genetic Sciences); two master’s programs (Health Promotion Sciences, Health Care Genetics); and a PhD program in Health Promotion Sciences. A number of faculty in the Department also conduct grant-funded research in obesity, HIV/AIDS, digital health, behavioral genomics, nutrition, food policy, cancer prevention, and public health. The successful candidate will be based at the Waterbury regional campus as a full faculty member in the Department of Allied Health Sciences. This position is the first of what is anticipated to be three to four faculty hires who will reside on the Waterbury campus. The successful candidate will be expected to be semi-autonomous in representing the Department and major on the regional campus while working under the advisement of Department leadership based in Storrs. Periodic travel to the Storrs campus is required. The successful candidate will function effectively as a team member with faculty and staff in other departments at Waterbury and with AHS faculty and staff in Storrs. Primary duties will include teaching multiple undergraduate courses, advising a moderate number of students, and engaging with leaders in the community (including clinics and community agencies), assisting in student experiential learning placements, and coordinating daily operations of the AHS major on the regional campus.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

  • Teach the equivalent of a minimum of three, 3-credit undergraduate courses each year; including other lower credit courses as assigned
  • Integrating and coordinating the current Storrs-based academic advising system for Allied Health Sciences majors at the Waterbury campus, including but not limited to:
    • Providing comprehensive academic advising for undergraduate Allied Health Sciences majors, assisting them in the formulation of career goals and the planning of academic coursework
    • Maintaining an assigned caseload of advisees (anticipated 40-50 students) and serving as a resource to students who are exploring health career options
    • Serving as a resource to faculty and staff regarding AHS major requirements
  • Serving as the point person for daily operations of the AHS major at the Waterbury campus, including:
    • Providing supervision of the AHS major
    • Coordinating and supervising registration and course scheduling activities
    • Representing the Department at meetings and events
    • Facilitating the development and coordination of service learning/internships with area health and community agencies
    • Others as assigned
  • Participating in the Department’s recruitment and orientation of new students
  • Serving as a resource and maintaining cooperative relationships with Waterbury campus faculty and staff and AHS department faculty and staff in Storrs, other University offices, and community partners; making referrals as appropriate
  • Participating in an active program of professional development and/or research consistent with personal and professional goals
  • Serving on campus, Department, College and/or University committees
  • Other duties as assigned

The successful candidate will also be expected to support the Department’s efforts to recruit and retain students from diverse backgrounds and broaden participation among members of underrepresented groups; demonstrate through their research, teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and/or research tools; and demonstrate leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests. The position requires periodic travel to the Storrs campus (e.g. monthly Department meetings) and to student placement sites in the Waterbury area. Some expected activities may require occasional evening, weekend, and summer hours. The successful candidate will be expected to work relatively independently and collaboratively in a work environment that is supportive but also involves deadlines and fluctuating demands in the schedule.


  1. PhD in health-related field or higher education; or terminal degree (Master’s or higher) in health-related field
  2. Experience in health-related field or in higher education
  3. Teaching-related experience which demonstrates ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and present effectively, including in small group and/or large group settings
  4. Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication and strong interpersonal skills
  5. Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity through teaching and research


  1. Two years’ work experience in a health-related field
  2. College-level teaching experience as instructor of record, including background and expertise to teach a range of content in health-related science courses
  3. Potential to teach courses in topics addressing disparities and inequities in health
  4. Experience in advising or mentoring in a healthcare or higher education setting
  5. Experience in connecting with leaders in clinical, community, and other agencies.
  6. Demonstrated leadership experience involving assertiveness, advocacy, and initiative-taking while working collaboratively in a team environment
  7. Demonstrated success in engaging with diverse communities, including first-generation college students and underrepresented populations
