Tenure-Track Position in Health Disparities Research (Assistant Professor)
The Department of Allied Health Sciences at the University of Connecticut invites applications for a tenure-track faculty member (60% research, 40% teaching) at the rank of Assistant Professor with an expected start date of August 23, 2019.

UConn also sponsors institutes and centers conducting research on health disparities affecting minority and other underserved populations that can offer exceptional opportunities to establish interdisciplinary collaborations, including the Health Disparities Institute;, the Africana Studies Institute; El Instituto: Institute of Latina/o, Caribbean, and Latin American Studies; Asian and Asian American Studies Institute; the Department of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; and the Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity.
The Department of Allied Health Sciences has a vibrant, multidisciplinary faculty dedicated to advancing knowledge through interdisciplinary research, teaching and community service. We are continuing to expand by adding two new tenure-track faculty members in 2019 after adding five new faculty in 2017. With 28 faculty, over 750 undergraduates and 28 graduate students, we actively engage in research in obesity, HIV/AIDS, digital health, behavioral genomics, nutrition, food policy, cancer prevention, and public health. The Department offers an undergraduate major in Allied Health with multiple concentrations, including Public Health and Health Promotion and Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety; three nationally-accredited health programs (Dietetics, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Diagnostic Genetic Sciences); two masters programs (Health Promotion Sciences, Health Care Genetics); and a PhD program in Health Promotion Sciences. Faculty also receive research and grant support through the Institute for Collaboration on Health, Intervention and Policy (InCHIP), a multidisciplinary research institute with national and international impact on health behaviors at the individual, environmental, social and policy levels.
We invite candidates from a broad range of academic disciplines and research areas to apply. The successful candidate will have expertise and research experience that addresses disparities in health outcomes for any group who has historically experienced barriers to achieving health and well-being due to their race or ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, disability, geographic location, or other characteristics linked to discrimination or exclusion. Candidates’ research may examine any of various topics in health and healthcare, social determinants, behavioral health or other related content areas. Candidates should have the potential to collaborate with current multidisciplinary Departmental and University faculty in research that examines a broad range of issues in health promotion, prevention, and treatment.
Duties & Responsibilities
The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the research and scholarship mission of the University through extramural funding, high-quality publications and national/international recognition. In the area of teaching, the successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction and advising/mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the Department’s curriculum through teaching of existing courses and/or development of new and innovative courses.
The successful candidate will also be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through their research, teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; and demonstrate leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.
This 9-month, tenure track position has an expected start date of August 23, 2019, with a primary academic appointment at the Storrs campus. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
- A doctoral degree in a relevant discipline, including (but not limited to) social sciences, behavioral science, public health, social work, public policy or health sciences
- A record of research scholarship in health disparities as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications
- Evidence of successful collaborations with researchers in one or more disciplines external to their own
- Demonstrated excellent skills in oral and written communication and strong interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity through teaching and research
- Demonstrated successful partnerships and/or engagement with disadvantaged populations through research
- Postdoctoral research experience
- Potential for inter-disciplinary collaborations with multiple departmental faculty
- Evidence of promise as an independent investigator through extramural grant funding and/or submitted grant applications
- Potential to supervise graduate and/or undergraduate student research and attract students from under-represented populations
- Potential to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in topics addressing health disparities
This is a 9-month, tenure track position with an expected start date of August 23, 2019, and will support the department’s mission to be a national and international leader in health promotion science, education, and research. The successful candidate’s primary academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
