MLS Admissions & Applications

Undergraduate Admissions
The MLS undergraduate program is a competitive program open to students in their junior and senior years who have met the general admission (or guaranteed admission) requirements. Students typically apply during the spring semester of their sophomore year for program entry the following fall. Applications are accepted annually beginning in November with a February 1 deadline. Please note: while you may complete course on a part-time basis during your junior year, you must enroll full-time your senior year and complete a required summer session due to the nature of lab courses and clinical rotations.

Information for Incoming Freshmen
Students who enter UConn as freshmen with the intention of applying to the MLS program may declare any related major. However, we highly recommend declaring the Allied Health Sciences major to allow for advising within the Department. You'll spend your freshman and sophomore years completing prerequisite courses before applying to the MLS program which will begin in your junior year.

Information for Transfer Students
Because of limited space in the program, preference is given to current UConn students. Transfer applicants will be reviewed on a space-available basis according to general admission requirements.

General Admission Requirements

  1. Prerequisite Science courses (overall science GPA of 2.7 or better is considered competitive)
    • General Chemistry (CHEM 1127Q & CHEM 1128Q - or - CHEM 1124Q & CHEM 1125Q)
    • Organic Chemistry (CHEM 2241 - or - CHEM 2443 & CHEM 2444)
    • Biochemistry (MCB 2000)
    • Principles of Biology (BIO 1107)
    • Statistics (STAT 1000Q - or - STAT 1100Q)
    • Math - MATH 1060 or higher
  2. Clarity of written communication
  3. Quality of references
  4. Completed all general education requirements
  5. Completed one W course
  6. Overall GPA of 3.0 required for all coursework in the program

Additionally, though not required, the following may enhance your application:

  1. Optional Interview with the Program Director - A personal interview with the Program Director prior to submitting your application is recommended. This is especially true if you have an overall GPA under 3.0. Students with lower GPAs who demonstrate commitment to their studies and the potential for success in the field will be reviewed on an individual basis.

Guaranteed Admission Criteria

Applicants who meet the criteria below are guaranteed admission to the MLS undergraduate program. Applicants who do not meet all of these criteria will be reviewed according to the general admission criteria above.

  1. Entered UConn as a freshman
  2. Applied to MLS program within two years of freshman admission
  3. Completed three successive semesters of full-time study of required UConn coursework
  4. Earned an overall GPA of at least 3.0
  5. Met all General Admission Requirements (above) and submit program application by the deadline

Applying to the Medical Laboratory Sciences Programs

Applicants interested in the undergraduate major or certificate program in Medical Laboratory Sciences must apply as described below, using the appropriate application for the desired program. Undergraduate Major Application Information

The undergraduate major in Medical Laboratory Sciences is only open to students in their junior and senior years. You should plan to apply by February 1 of your sophomore year. Regardless of your previously declared major, you are required to complete a supplemental application to be considered for the MLS program. Please consult the undergraduate admissions section above for pre-requisite coursework and other admissions criteria.

Application Deadline: February 1 for preferred consideration

Required Application Components:

  1. Online Application
  2. Unofficial UConn transcript (access through Student Admin & upload within online application)
  3. Information about any non-UConn institutions you have attended post-high school (you will need to request that official transcripts from all institutions be sent to the Department of Allied Health Sciences by mail or by e-mail)
  4. 500-word Personal Statement (paste directly into online application - Personal Statement Information)
  5. Names of two recommenders who will submit letters of recommendation (you may submit sealed letters of recommendation directly to the Department of Allied Health Sciences or ask your recommenders to submit by mail/e-mail)

Letters of Recommendation & Official Transcripts

  • Please request that your two recommenders submit their letters of recommendation directly to the Department of Allied Health Sciences by mail or e-mail (see below) or submit to you in sealed envelopes so that you can deliver to the Department. The AHS form for recommendations must be used.
  • If you have attended academic institutions other than UConn, please request that your official transcript(s) be sent to the Department of Allied Health Sciences by mail or e-mail (see below).
  • For fall 2021 applicants, please make sure your transcript has official fall 2020 grades posted before submitting your application.
